President Akufo-Addo has delivered the toughest warning yet to Ministers of State who want to run for President of the New Patriotic Party (NPP).
According to Asaase Radio in Accra, the President challenged his appointees at a cabinet meeting on Friday to "concentrate on the job" they were given "or quit now to pursue" their presidential ambitions.
The warning comes as the ruling party grows increasingly concerned about who will run for the NPP's flagbearership and, as a result, lead the party to the 2024 elections.
However, the President reminded prospects in his government that despite the fact that 13 of the 17 candidates who ran for president in 2008 were in office, they were not seen actively campaigning throughout the first year of the former John Agyekum Kufuor administration's second term.
As a result, President Akufo-Addo chastised some of his government's contenders for their "premature" move.
The President warned them not to let their ambition get in the way of their ministerial responsibilities, calling it "selfish and reckless."
Meanwhile, the NPP's Steering Committee convened at the party's headquarters on Saturday to discuss the same topic of candidates for the open seat in the party, as well as other important matters.
The ruling party is gearing up for a round of elections for party executives at all levels.
